First up is checking if your tow vehicle can handle the weight of your four wheeler. You can refer to your vehicle’s gross combined weight rating to determine just how much weight can be towed. This figure includes both the weight of cargo and passengers, so be sure to account for that when adding the weight of your ATV. There are some other basic pointers to keep in mind. If you’re towing more than one vehicle, you’ll need to figure out how you plan to distribute the weight evenly from left to right. Do not put too much weight on one tire. You’ll also want to put around 10 to 20 percent of the total trailer weight on the hitch. The best way to do this is to put the majority of the weight over the front axle.
Now you’re ready to hook your trailer up to your tow vehicle. You can start by raising the trailer’s tongue up until it’s seated directly above the ball hitch. Next, back up slowly until the latch is under the tongue. Lower the tongue carefully onto the ball joint and make sure it’s securely set in place. You’ll then want to take the tow chains and form an X beneath the tongue and connect them to the tow vehicle. This will prevent losing your trailer should it become unhitched. Lastly, set up your brakes and lights accordingly and test them out to ensure they’re working correctly.
You’re almost done! It’s time to load your ATV. Refer to the owner’s manual for your ramp so you can confirm it’s set up properly. Use precision to align your quad with the ramp before you attempt to ride it up. This may take some practice, as you need enough speed to get the vehicle up the ramp, but you also need to be sure you don’t go so fast that you overshoot the trailer! The last step is to secure your ATV once it’s in the trailer. You might consider using ratchet straps as they can compress the suspension and limit the amount of movement while in tow.
It may seem like common sense, but you must practice safe driving while towing your ATV. Use extra care once you reach the open road and keep your precious cargo in mind, especially when you’re making turns. Don’t travel at speeds over 60 mph because trailers aren’t built for that. Always keep a safe traveling distance from cars in front of you so there’s plenty of time to brake. Make good use of your mirrors and avoid passing drivers on the road unless it’s absolutely necessary. This may sound tedious, but it’s all to protect the investment you’re towing behind you!
You’re all set and ready to hit the trails! Remember that when it towing your ATV, practice makes perfect. Don’t feel the need to rush!
