1. Find a Lightweight Stove

Many motorcyclists will rely on dried food for overnight trips, which can be a great way to save space, but the longer you’re on the road, the more likely it is you’ll want a decent, well-cooked meal every once in a while.

You can go the classic firepit route (which may not be reliable during fire bans) or you can locate a lightweight stove, powered by gas or butane. Camping supplies stores are a great resource for this, as they’ll be selling products that are more compact and easy to carry around.

2. Combine Utensils

You can also find utensils that can easily be nested into one another or even folded and collapsed to take up less space. Our recommendations, in order from most important to most optional are:

  • Multi-purpose silverware
  • Durable camping plate
  • Food-designated cutting knife (don’t use a pocket knife to cut food)
  • A small pan
  • Collapsible bowl
  • Collapsible mug

These cover most of your basics, although you’ll need to look at the kind of food you’re packing to make the most useful choices. Keep in mind, some of your cooking and eating supplies can be used more than one way. Maybe you use your fork as a spatula or a bigger mug as a bowl.

3. Filter Water

Don’t rely on having access to bottled or clean water all the time. Even if you’re staying close to civilization, it’s best to be prepared for anything. Pack a water filtration device of some kind, like filtration tablets, straws, or a more elaborate microfiltration system.

Iodine tablets have also been used to filter water, although if you’re cooking with this water, it can make the food taste a little odd.

4. Condense Ingredients

When it comes to packing food, the fewer ingredients you pack, the better. Also keep in mind that it should be non-perishable. Unless you want to arrange to pack a cooling device as well, of course. You probably won’t have space for that.

What you can do is plan your meals strategically. Pack a handful of essential ingredients that can be applied to some of the most basic recipes. This can include spices and oil, in combination with other dry ingredients like oats, rice, pasta, nuts, potato flakes, and beans.

If you’re staying close to a market, you can pick up fresh produce, meat and other perishable items just for that particular meal. Alternatively, stop by your local army surplus store to pick up bag meals. This way, you can travel to your heart’s content and still maintain a nutritious diet.

Camping on a motorcycle trip can be an experience unlike any other but it’s more challenging than a traditional motorcycle ride, and presents unique obstacles. You might find that even with proper planning, you could use a little more storage space.
