Used for both recreational and work-related tasks, ATVs have to cross difficult terrain to get you where you need to go. These off-road vehicles were built to take on a number of different conditions, but sometimes a specialized part can help you get more out of your quad. This is why there are a lot of ATV tire types on the market. If you’re new to these, you may not know all your options of which one would be best for you.

This is the standard tire that most ATVs come equipped with from the dealership. All terrain tires are durable and versatile but they’re not built to provide spectacular performance on certain terrains, such as mud or snow. Trails tires also come in a wide variety of tread patterns and their tread depth can range from one to a few centimeters. With closely-aligned treads, these tires offer you decent traction on many surfaces and are good for general-purpose riding.
If you’ve got your heart set on mudding, you’ll want to arm your ATV with mud tires. The very tall lugs on these tires can grip the mud more tightly, preventing slippage. You may have to get your quad lifted to fit these tires, or you may need wheel spacers added because these tires are much larger and heavier than others.
Before you go ahead with mud tires, know that bigger tires may need your ATV to have more power, and they can also wear down certain joints and bearings. Some tires have lugs on the shoulders as well to help clear away mud. Keep in mind that mud tires aren’t designed for hard-pack terrain. You can damage them if you try to drive them on hard-pack dirt or pavement.
If you live where there’s a lot of snow, you can take your quad out if you get some snow tires. These tires are designed with either short lugs with more spacing or trail tires with thin lugs. For better traction on ice, you can add studs to the former tire design. The second design is much better for traveling over powdery snow. The wide spaces between the treads on snow ATV tires help to clear snow away from the tire as it spins so that you don’t skid.
Another great place to take your quad is sandy beaches or places with sandy dunes. To handle this terrain, you need the most specialized tires of all the ATV tires—sand tires. With paddle-like protrusions that act like small shovels pushing away sand from under and around the tire, these tires will help you navigate sand and even jump those dunes! The front and rear tires are designed differently, with the front tires having a slicker tread pattern to help you steer. Word of caution: never use these on any other terrain as they will get destroyed.
Also known as turf savers, pavement tires are designed to ride on flat lawns, turf and even hard pavement. Other ATV tires are likely to shred turf with their protrusions and lugs, so these tires have shallow treads that are tightly spaced in order to provide a smooth riding experience on flat ground. Never use these tires on terrain where you’ll need more traction, as you simply won’t get it from such smooth tires!
