ATVs, or all terrain vehicles, are versatile, rugged and useful for both work and play purposes. While your ATV comes standard with plenty of great features, there are a variety of aftermarket add-ons that can make your ride more comfortable and practical. From practical safety gear to navigational tools, you can outfit your ATV so that it serves you even better than it did before.

Winches are useful in many applications when you’re riding your ATV. For starters, they can help you to pull a companion’s ATV out of a ditch or sticky mud. They can also be used to tow equipment or lug large objects like dead trees out of your path. If you’re hunting and have killed some game in a tough-to-reach spot, tie it to the winch to pull it out into the open.
Even the most responsible and prepared person in the world is prone to unforeseen emergencies and accidents. You could slam into a pothole, hit a deer that jumps out suddenly or swerve to avoid another rider who isn’t as careful, only to hit a rock or tree that puts a dent in your ATV. That’s why it’s good to be ready for anything with emergency kits.
Pack a toolkit that contains wrenches, a spare tire, a tire pressure gauge, an air pump or compressor, zip ties, duct tape, vice-grips and anything else you suspect you might need if your ATV breaks down suddenly. Low tire pressure and loose bolts can be repaired easily by most people with a little knowledge. If your ATV has a major breakdown, you may simply have to load it up and take it to the mechanic, but most small problems are easy enough to fix that you can resume riding once you address the issues.
Keep a well-supplied first aid kit on your ATV that contains bandages, gauze, tweezers, burn cream, ointments, aloe vera, bug spray, sunscreen, painkillers, stomach medications and anything else you might need for minor illnesses and injuries sustained on the trail. With this kit, you should be able to get yourself or a companion fixed up enough to get back into town to see a doctor.
Riding an ATV over rugged terrain and through wooded areas increases your chances of suffering injury, so it’s best to protect your body well. A motocross helmet is rated for high-impact extreme sports riding, so it’s perfect to wear on an ATV. You’ll want to invest in a pair of goggles as eye protection, and these can be tinted to offer UV protection, too. Wear long sleeves and pants on the trail to protect your skin from bugs, sun and scrapes. Gloves and sturdy boots are practical additions to your protective clothing.
Your ATV doesn’t come from the factory with much storage available. Fortunately, aftermarket storage boxes and bags are easy to add to your ATV, giving you space for all the supplies you’ll need whether you’re hard at work or hard at play. Some storage containers are even watertight for rainy conditions.
For riding in dusk or early dawn conditions, or under heavy forest canopies, an LED light bar is extremely beneficial. Useful for hunters and others who might find themselves riding in dim conditions, LEDs are compact, powerful and energy-efficient.
Navigational tools are always useful on any adventure. The traditional paper map and compass of the past have given way to tools that rely on satellites for precise location pinpoints. While you could rely on your phone to navigate, this is both a battery and data suck, especially in rural areas with poor cell service, so using a dedicated GPS is a better option. You can have the GPS system mounted to your quad to make it easy to use while you drive so you’ll always know where you’re going and where you are.
